A warning about the drug called Topamax was issued by the United State Food and Drug Administration on March 4th. This drug is also called as topiramate and it is approved by the FDA in the year 1998. It is identified that it will not be taken by the pregnant women and it will provide serious health problem to the unborn child. The topamax lawsuit 2011 explains all the risk about the drug and defects it caused for the baby. The FDA advised the health care professionals to warn their patients about the defects of the drug before prescribing it and there are millions of prescriptions for the Topamax have been dispensed already. The health professionals warned that if the drug is used by the women during her first trimester pregnancy then it will increase the risk of oral cleft defects for the baby and it can be cleft palate and cleft lip. If the palate or the parts of the lip is not completely fused together then the defect of oral cleft occurs and it requires a corrective surgery and also it leads to ear infections. This drug is mainly used to treat the seizures due to epilepsy and it is also approved for the treatment of migraine headache.
